About CDC Project

The Mzumbe University through its Centre of Excellence in Health Monitoring and Evaluation (COEHME) was awarded a 5-years grants funding on 1st October 2020 by Centers for Deseases Control Prevention (CDC) with grant number No: 2 NU2GGH002292-01-00 through cooperative agreement between the Government of Tanzania and Federal Government of the United States to provide Technical Assistance to the Government of Tanzania (GOT) and Public Health Institutions (PHIs) toward Sustained Health Systems Strengthening in Tanzania under PEPFAR.

The COEHME is working with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and health facilities to support GoT’s efforts to develop sustainable systems and a trained workforce to respond to the HIV epidemic as well as improving public health systems and services in the United Republic of Tanzania. These systems will train a workforce with the technical and leadership skills required to monitor and respond to the epidemic at the national, regional, and district levels. The funding mechanism for this grant is on annual basis upon successful completion of the planned activities.

Year one: 2020/2021

In year one, COEHME was required to focus on four major areas of the project which  included:

  1. Human Resources for Health: Key activities included the following;
  1. Support Tanzania Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (both advanced and intermediate)
  2. Strengthen the capacity of MoHCDGEC/ Centre for Distance Education (CDE) to promote eLearning
  3. Build on established Centre for Distance Education (CDE) e-learning platform and module development to strengthen implementation of HIV service provision
  1. Extended Community Health Outcomes: Key activities included the following;
  1. Provide TA to GOT entities in the management and coordination of the ECHO project in Tanzania
  2. Capacitate remote teaching and mentorship at all levels of the health system through Project ECHO to ensure high quality HIV service delivery
  1. Public Financial Management for HIV and AIDS Response

Provide technical support to GOT and PHIs to monitor and track efficiency of mobilizing, managing, and disbursing domestic funds to support a comprehensive national response to HIV and AIDS in Tanzania.

  1. Continuous Quality Improvement

Provide technical support to GOT and PHIs in the area of quality improvement.

Year two 2021/2022

In year two the project is focusing on two program areas which are;

Program Area One: Human Resources for Health:

  1. Support Tanzania FELTP advanced and intermediate programs
  2. Support coordination and strengthening of HRH Management to enhance competences, productivity, recruitment, deployment and retention for quality delivery of Health & HIV and AIDS services.
  • Provide TA to GOT entities in the management and coordination of the ECHO project in Tanzania

Program Area Two: Policy, Planning, Coordination & Management of Disease Control Programs:

Support implementation of all ECHO clinics in Tanzania and capacitate remote teaching and mentorship at all levels of the health system through Project ECHO to ensure high quality HIV service delivery
